Born in Korea, Hyun-Sue Chung received B.Mus. and M.Mus in composition fromSeoul National University, having studied with Byung-Dong Paik. She completed her Ph.D. in composition at King's College, University of London under the supervision of Sir Harrison Birtwistle, and her works were performed at Royal Academy of Music, Cheltenham Festival, King's College Great Hall Concert in U.K., Music for Galway Season in Ireland, EuroAsia Chamber Music Festival, Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival, Pan Music Festival, Korean Chamber Music EXPO and 2010 Composer Prism in Korea. She was awarded the 35th Seoul Contemporary Composition Festival Award with guitar solo piece, Time Song and the 23rd Korean Composer's Award with Beads for female singer and seven players which is six settings on Emily Dickinson¡¯s. Also her Ancient Wind was selected and performed at ISCM World New Music Days 2009 in Sweden.
She has been well known for teaching composition at young genius composers¡¯ class in Seoul Arts Center Academy of Music and directing Ensemble Luminasia, the contemporary music group. Also she is an associate professor at College of Arts, Chonnam National University and a committee member of The Contemporary Composers¡¯ Society, UNJI and Gwangju Culture Foundation.
